What Makes Cashmere Perform? Inside Alpine Revival’s Performance Cashmere.

Cashmere is one of nature’s original performance fibers. It is exceptionally warm yet lightweight, naturally breathable, and remarkably soft. Most people think of cashmere as something luxurious and delicate, something to be worn only on special occasions.

We're trying to change that. 

We started Alpine Revival with a different question: what if cashmere could keep everything that makes it exceptional, while actually standing up to the way you live?

Our Performance Cashmere reinforces premium cashmere with a fine elastane filament, giving each garment greater flexibility, resilience, shape retention, pilling resistance, machine washability, and durability.

The result moves and performs more like technical apparel while preserving the warmth, softness, and unmistakable feel of cashmere.

Because true luxury is not something that lives carefully folded in a closet.

Why We Chose Cashmere for Everyday Adventure.

I spent 21 years on ski patrol doing avalanche control. I won a world championship on skis and landed a backflip in my 50's which is either impressive or a bad idea depending on who you ask. I also spent a decade buying products for other people’s stores, which means I have opened a lot of packages and felt a lot of sweaters.

When we started developing Alpine Revival, we ordered knit samples in several fibers, including merino, which I have always loved.

Then we opened the cashmere sample.

That was the moment. The feel was what I had been looking for. But I could not see myself making another beautiful sweater you had to baby.

Cashmere comes from the fine undercoat of cashmere goats. It offers warmth without a lot of weight and a softness that makes you want to keep wearing it. Those qualities were the starting point. The challenge was building a garment that could handle more of everyday life.

What Makes Our Performance Cashmere Different?

A good sweater depends on more than the fiber named on the label. The yarn, knit density, construction, and finishing all influence how it feels and wears.

For Alpine Revival, the difference comes down to how we knit cashmere and elastane together.

How Cashmere and Elastane Work Together.

We knit a fine elastane filament alongside the cashmere, so both run through every stitch.

The cashmere provides the feel. The elastane adds stretch and helps the garment rebound after movement. Think reaching overhead, bending an elbow, or spending a long day in the same sweater.

The aim is a piece that moves with you and returns to its shape.

A Dense Knit for Everyday Wear.

Hold a loosely knit cashmere sweater up to a window and you may see light through it. 

That is normal. That is most of what is sold as cashmere, and it is the reason people treat cashmere the way they do. You wear it twice a year. You send it out to be dry cleaned. You keep it away from anything with a zipper, red wine, oil.

Ours is deliberately dense.

That difference is not an accident, and it is not thickness for its own sake. We call it Performance Cashmere, and it is the whole reason this company exists.

Why Cashmere Works Well for Cold-Weather Layering.

Here is the thing most people never get told about cashmere. The reason it is worth the money has almost nothing to do with softness.

A cashmere fiber is long and hollow, like a strand of hair (because it is a strand of hair - Kashmir goat hair). A wool fiber is shorter and it kinks, over and over down its length, and it traps air between those kinks. That is how wool keeps you warm. It holds heat in place.

Hollow behaves differently. A hollow fiber takes on your properties rather than trapping them, which means it moves with your temperature instead of fighting it. It is why you can wear cashmere into a warm lodge and not immediately want it off, and why down, which is very good at trapping warmth, is also very good at trapping the moisture that comes with it.

The goats produce that fiber because of where they live. Ours comes from Mongolian herders, where roughly 90 percent of the world's cashmere goats live their lives, enduring temperature swings most animals could not survive. The fiber is nature's answer to that climate.

The cashmere used for yarn comes from the incredibly soft undercoat of the goat, and there is not much of it. It can take the fiber from roughly four goats to make a single sweater, with that coat collected only once a year. That scarcity is part of what makes good cashmere expensive before anyone has designed, knit, or constructed a garment from it.

Where it comes from matters, too. Our cashmere is sourced from four producing regions in Inner Mongolia, China. Our yarn supplier’s sourcing approach includes The Good Cashmere Standard, which sets requirements for goat welfare, herder working conditions, and environmental protection. Because the animals, people, and land behind a sweater deserve as much consideration as the finished piece. Learn more about our cashmere sourcing.

How to Recognize Quality Cashmere.

One thing I learned quickly is that softness alone does not tell you whether cashmere is good. Fiber length matters. Fineness matters. How the fibers are sorted and processed matters. And the density of the finished knit matters.

In fact, some cashmere that feels incredibly soft the first time you touch it has been heavily processed and washed to create that feeling. Shorter fibers can feel beautiful in the store and still wear out faster once you actually live in the sweater. We tested different yarns before landing on ours because I cared much more about how it would feel and perform years from now than how impressive it felt for thirty seconds on a rack.

How Cashmere and Elastane Work Together.

We knit a fine elastane filament alongside the cashmere, so every stitch holds both fibers. It runs throughout the garment rather than being added as a separate stretch panel.

The piece is knit under slight tension and relaxes onto your body. The elastane helps it stretch and rebound, so it moves with you and returns to its shape instead of staying stretched at places like the elbows.

You get the feel of cashmere with a little more give. And a lot more reason to wear it.

Does Performance Cashmere Pill?

Our dense knit helps reduce pilling by giving loose fibers less room to work their way to the surface.

That does not mean it will never pill. Friction still happens, especially under bag straps and around sleeves. If pills appear, gently remove them with a cashmere comb. A little maintenance is part of owning knitwear, including ours.

Is Performance Cashmere Warm Enough for Skiing and Outdoor Wear?

Our Performance Cashmere is designed for the mountain and the life around it. That includes skiing, cool-weather walks, travel, and the part of the day when you finally sit down.

How much warmth you need depends on the weather, your activity level, and what else you are wearing. For skiing, think of it as a layer within your clothing system. Add an outer shell when conditions call for protection from wind or precipitation.

What I wanted was a layer I could wear outside and still feel good wearing when the shell came off. At lunch, on the drive home, or straight into dinner.

Is Alpine Revival Cashmere Machine Washable?

Yes. Our Performance Cashmere can be machine washed when you follow the care instructions:

• Use cold water.
• Choose a delicate cycle.
• Lay flat to dry.
• Never put it in the dryer.

Easy care was part of the brief from the beginning. I wanted to wear the sweater, wash it, and get on with my life.

The construction is only half of what you are paying for. Each piece was designed with intention and incorporated features missing from 

The Go-Time Hoodie comes up higher than you expect and turns into a cowl at your neck, and it is two layers there, not one. There is extra material at the elbows where wear actually happens. The tail sits lower in the back so it stays put when you sit down. There are stripe accents in colors you may not notice from across a room. And by the way, the drawstrings actually work!

Our Women’s Glacier Flannel says Ski Powder Laugh Louder on the back. We had it machine embroidered first and it looked wrong to me, so it was stitched by hand instead. Front and back yoke offer additional warmth, along with a western nod, while bright stripes down the sides shows your playful side. 

The Powder Day Cashmere Zip gives you an easy way to adjust coverage as the day changes. Zip it up on a chilly morning or open the neck when you head inside. Smooth, flat seams keep bulk down beneath a shell, while knit-in stripe accents bring a little personality when the jacket comes off.

The Women’s Granite Crew and Men’s Granite Crew bring a little 1970s ski spirit into everyday life. Signature stripes accent the shoulders and sleeves, giving a familiar crew neck its own personality. Linked construction joins the knit panels stitch by stitch for smooth, flat seams. We make roughly 100 pieces per color of each style. Small runs mean the details stay possible and it also means when a color is gone, it is gone.
